It used to be that sneakers were relatively cheap, and they were called sneakers. Not so these days. Nike is almost ready to unveil its new line of LeBron James sneakers, which will cost $315, according to Forbes magazine. Of course, NBA star James is probably the brightest star in basketball today. As mentioned before, his hometown is Akron, Ohio. ... The Crawford County Fair has been drawing very well. One reason is the good weather we've been enjoying, but the fair has always drawn well with plenty of people from Erie going to the high-quality concerts. ... A Light the Night Walk at Jerry Uht Park will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and the money raised will stay in Erie. Checks, made out to the "Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, can be sent to Herb Rubinfield at Fisher Jewelers, 1012 State St. ... We keep hoping we'll see the presidential candidates in Erie in the next several weeks. We keep reading that Pennsylvania is a swing state, but apparently Erie isn't one of the areas considered vital by challenger Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama. In contrast, Obama seems to be visiting Ohio every week along with Vice President Joe Biden. All of the candidates have been busy as the Republican and Democratic national conventions approach. The Republican Conventions starts Monday in Tampa, Fla., and continues through Thursday. The Democrats will meet in Charlotte, N.C., from Sept. 3 through 6. About 50,000 people are expected to go to Tampa. That is much bigger than the Democratic Convention is expected to draw in Charlotte, and it won't cost as much.

Many of the thousands who attended the D-Day re-enactment in Conneaut, Ohio, last Friday and Saturday are still talking about the impressive event. About 750 re-enactors wore Allied and German uniforms and used World War II equipment, including tanks, landing craft and planes, as they mimicked the landing at Normandy on June 6, 1944. Among the local Normandy-era veterans present were Cliff Taylor, Jack Bentley, George Diller and Dick Winne. ... Taylor and Bentley, just 18-year-olds, were tailgunners on B-24 Liberators, stationed in Italy. Winne was a bombardier on a B-17 plane. Diller, now 87, was a member of the famed 26th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon, the first soldiers to take dogs into combat (New Guinea in the Pacific in 1944). His story is featured in the 2011 book by Robert Fickbohn and Sandra Fickbohn Granger, "Cold Noses, Brave Hearts: Dogs and men of the 26th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon." ... Summit Township supervisors voted unanimously for the tax plan to help Lord Corp. stay in Erie at the former Bush Industries plant on Robison Road. Now it's up to the Fort LeBoeuf School Board to do its part. It would be a terrible blow to the local economy if this complicated deal doesn't get done. ... Marathon swimmer Diana Nyad showed tremendous courage in her attempt to swim the 103 miles from Cuba to the Florida Keys. She made it more than 70 miles before storms and continuous jellyfish stings caused her to give up on her 63rd birthday. ... We noticed that Jimmy Haslim, the new owner of the Cleveland Browns, has been spending time at the Cleveland Browns training camp. Considering he is spending a billion dollars, it's understandable he wants to know what kind of team he's got. ... Many are looking forward to this weekend's Zabawa Polish Festival at Holy Trinity Social Center, 2200 Reed St., and environs. It starts today from 5 to 10 p.m., and continues Saturday from 1 to 10:30 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. There is always a good crowd for the annual event on East 22nd Street, east of Ash Street. Holy Trinity Pastor Monsignor Tom McSweeney says to show up hungry.
