Nike Inc. disclosed the official retail price of its LeBron X basketball sneaker on Thursday, saying the technology-embedded shoe will go on sale starting Sept. 22 for $270.
A less expensive version that doesn't contain Nike+ sensors, which track how high players jump and how far they run, will sell for $180, the Beaverton, Ore., footwear maker said.
The anticipated price of the shoe, named after basketball star LeBron James, spurred criticism from the National Urban League and some consumers after The Wall Street Journal, citing footwear analysts, reported the shoe could retail for more than $300.
Nike said the criticism wasn't a factor in the shoe's final price.
"The price hadn't been set yet and people were reacting to something that isn't accurate," said Nike spokeswoman Mary Remuzzi.
