Former NBA forward and current analyst Channing Frye doesn't think highly of some of LeBron James' Los Angeles Lakers teammates—or the quality of food available at Costco.
Frye said the following when Raul Barrigon of HoopsHype asked if how he would rate James' time with the Lakers if he left the team this summer.
"I think he made a great decision going to L.A. If he leaves, I'd rate him 8 out of 10. I can't give him a 10 out of 10 because he only won once. So Bron individually, I'll give them a 10 out of 10, but the Lakers, they only win championships, so he got one but then the other years he didn't make the playoffs, or they got beat in the first round or whatever it is that happened.
"I also think you look at some of the rosters that he's had and there's only so much you could do with that, right? You can't ask for Michelin-star meals with Costco ingredients at times. Sometimes it works, but he's 39 years old, so for me, if he leaves that's good, more power to him, but I think his time has been extremely successful. But in the end, you have to surround him with the right kind of players."
Yes, the Costco food court hasn't received a Michelin star (yet), but who's to say it won't someday? As Kevin Garnett once screamed, anything is possible.
Plus, if you're looking for higher-end food, then wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon fillets, Japanese Wagyu steaks and Ahi Tuna are available to the Costco masses. And if not, you can get a quality all-beef hot dog at the food court for just $1.50.
Frye's point still stands somewhat, in that James hasn't always had the requisite help needed to get the job done in L.A. Anthony Davis is having an excellent season, as Frye pointed out.
However, other players simply haven't gotten it done. Of note, James, Davis, Austin Reaves and D'Angelo Russell are the only rotation regulars on the team with above-average player efficiency ratings and positive box plus/minus scores, per Basketball-Reference.
As it stands, James and co. are struggling under .500 with a 19-20 record. Perhaps the rest of the team will step it up in time for a playoff run.
In the interim, the Lakers hope to hit .500 Saturday at the Utah Jazz.
