After some speculation, LeBron James, the honorary chair of the Met Gala, has said he would not be attending the event after all.
In a post on X on Monday afternoon, Mr. James said that he had sustained a knee injury at the end of the season playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.
"Hate to miss an historical event!" Mr. James wrote. "My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!"
His queen is his wife, Savannah James, who was seen in New York on Monday afternoon wearing a maroon suit.
Anna Wintour, the chief conte nt officer of Condé Nast and the editor in chief of Vogue, had named Mr. James honorary chair in October, but the course of the Lakers' season had called into question whether he would be able to attend. Had the team made it to the conference semifinals, the playoffs would have collided with the first Monday in May. But when the season ended for the Lakers last week with a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, it seemed there would be no doubt that Mr. James would be in attendance.
Online, Mr. James's fans posted about their disappointment, though some were relieved that the basketball star's post on X wasn't an announcement of his retirement.
He's the first guest confirmed to sit this one out. Last year, anticipated arrivals including Taylor Swift and Rihanna stayed home from the Met Gala.
