Depending on what the Dallas Mavericks would have to give up to land LeBron James if the Los Angeles Lakers ever make him available, it could make sense to give it a try.
However, that would be a good sign that the Mavericks expect Kyrie Irving to return during the playoffs, or shortly before, and believe they have an opportunity to win a championship as early as next season.

On paper, when the Mavericks are healthy, they're expected to be very good; however, there are concerns about what Irving will look like towards the end of next year, as his recent comments have raised some concerns.
Regarding James, if he becomes available, the Mavericks are expected to show interest in him.
According to recent comments from Jovan Buha of The Athletic, the Mavericks may have a chance to trade for him.
According to Buha, he's uncertain if the Lakers and James have a good relationship going right now.
"I mean, I want to be careful wit h what I say about Bron's relationship with the front office or the organization, but I don't think it's in the best place right now, to be completely honest," Buha said.

Now, it's essential to note that James has done this in the past with other teams and typically makes it known when he's unhappy.
It remains uncertain how he truly feels, or if this is him just putting pressure on the Lakers' front office to go all in.
The Lakers have an opportunity to win it all next year, but they're likely looking towards a multi-year plan with Luka Doncic.
James might not love that, but the organization has to do what they believe is best for themselves.
