What started as a typical Monday turned into the NBA world dissecting a 10-second video clip that LeBron James posted to social media. The caption reads, "The decision of all decisions. October 7th. 12 pm EST. #TheSecondDecision"
LeBron's first decision, of course, was when he announced on July 8, 2010, that he was taking his talents to South Beach, leaving the Cavaliers (for the first time) to sign with the Heat in free agency. Presumably, his second decision would be a retirement announcement, right?
One would think so, but this is LeBron. Retirement is an option (although it didn't sound like this would be his final season at media day last week), as he's entering his 23rd year of a historic career. It's coming sooner rather than later. LeBron isn't the type to announce his retirement at the end of a season, as it'd mean he wouldn't have a retirement tour. He, of all people, deserves one.
If he were to announce tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET that the 2025-26 season will be his final one in the NBA, it'd make sense, given the start of the regular season is around the corner. But it could be about something totally different.
LeBron teased retirement this summer in a commercial for Amazon Prime, which took place July 8-11. You will never guess what starts tomorrow, October 7, an d runs through October 8 — Amazon Prime Day.
Anything can happen, but this doesn't seem like the way LeBron would announce his retirement. This appears to be a marketing ploy by Amazon. They knew exactly what kind of frenzy a social media post like that would make.
There's also the fact that LeBron enjoys the attention, and that isn't written negatively. If this is about Amazon, you know LeBron is getting a good chuckle out of it. He knows that everyone will be waiting anxiously for 12 p.m. ET. Lakers fans on the West Coast will either wake up and be relieved or enter a state of mourning, knowing the season will be LeBron's last.
At the very least, it's yet another reminder not to take watching LeBron J ames playing basketball for granted. It may not be the announcement that everyone is dreading, but it will come sooner than you think. That much is clear.
