LeBron James, Bronny James on playing one-on-one against each other

With the Los Angeles Lakers a little short-handed in the backcourt lately, second-year guard Bronny James has gotten some meaningful playing time. Veteran guard Marcus Smart missed their last four games, and Luka Doncic served an automatic one-game suspension on Monday after getting his 16th technical foul in Friday's win against the Brooklyn Nets, opening the door for James.

While the 21-year-old hasn't put up significant numbers, he is getting invaluable experience that could help him later on. After Friday's game, he talked about another experience he had in his personal life some years ago.

He said that while playing one-on-one basketball against his father, LeBron, the elder James broke the backcourt. The younger James claimed it happened because he was winning that competition.

"The last time I pl ayed [LeBron] 1-on-1 - I don't know if this story came out - but he broke a backboard at our house in Miami," the younger James said.

When teammate Austin Reaves asked if it happened because he won, he said yes.

The elder James confirmed the story after Monday's 120-101 victory against the Washington Wizards.

"We had a hoop in our driveway, and I drove around him and dunked it," he said. "I didn't mean to shatter the glass, but yeah, I shattered it."

A reporter asked if his son had gotten hot in that game.

"He made a couple shots, but that's like M iami 'Bron. That's like invincible 'Bron."

A highlight for many men during their childhood years is finally beating their fathers in a game of one-on-one basketball. The younger James still has a lot of work to do to prove he belongs in the regular rotation of an NBA team on his own merits, but he sent a message on Saturday in the South Bay Lakers' final regular-season game.

In that contest, he had 26 points while shooting 9-of-12 from the field and 6-of-8 from 3-point range, and he made three treys in the fourth quarter as the G League Lakers defeated the Sioux Falls Skyforce 140-132. That win gave South Bay the top seed in the Western Conference, and it will begin the playoffs on Tuesday versus the San Diego Clippers.
